Presented by the Hibbing Arts Council
Join Dylan Days and welcome featured artist Scarlet Rivera to the stage of the historic Hibbing High School Auditorium. One of the world’s most prominent, active and versatile violinists, Rivera is known for her contributions to the recordings and performances of some of the most influential artists of our time, including Bob Dylan, Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, Keb ‘Mo, and David Johanson. Scarlet’s solo works expose the artistry of her singular creative genius as one of today’s most intelligent and passionate violinists. Though Rivera is a composer and performer in her own right, she has made vital contributions to Bob Dylan's Desire and Hard Rain albums, Dylan's World of John Hammond Special for NBC, his film Renaldo and Clara, and several cuts on Dylan's Biograph and The Bootleg Series. As a solo artist, Scarlet is an innovator on violin-she composes an original style of music, rich in melody and texture. In collaboration with Tommy Eyre on Behind The Crimson Veil, Scarlet realized the fullest expression of their combined musical potential and delivers an exotic blend of performances from the searing to the sublime. Rivera will be backed up by Gene LaFond & The Wild Unknown. Gene LaFond is a founding member of The Mere Mortals with the late Larry Kegan. Past gigs include opening for Bob Dylan, twice performing at Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert, opening for Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and Kinky Friedman as well as numerous sold out shows over the years in the twin Cities. Gene's current band, The Wild Unknown, carries on the tradition of original music and classic rock, blues and folk rock music. LaFond grew up in the Twin-Cities area of Minnesota and was in high school during the big folk boom of the late fifties and early sixties. In that time there were beatnik hangouts and coffee houses seemingly everywhere in this northern area. Gene and his friends would often go listen to a young Bob Dylan at a place called The Ten O'clock Scholar, a coffeehouse near the University of Minnesota. They were drawn into the smoke filled coffee houses to listen to the music like moths to a flame. LaFond and Kegan were Bob Dylan's personal guests on tour annually for 15 years - including on various stretches of the Rolling Thunder Revue Tour. It was on these trips that LaFond honed his writing skills that led to recording of his two noteworthy CDs of original songs "The Wild Unknown" and "Geno". The Rolling Thunder Revue was a famed concert tour comprised of a traveling caravan of musicians, headed by Bob Dylan, that took place in the fall of 1975 and the spring of 1976. The January 1976 release of Dylan's album Desire fell between the two legs of the tour. Among those featured in the Revue were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Kinky Friedman and Bob Neuwirth. Neuwirth assembled the backing musicians, including T-Bone Burnett, Mick Ronson, and David Mansfield, and, from the Desire sessions, violinist Scarlet Rivera, bassist Rob Stoner, and drummer Howie Wyeth.
The winners of the 2009 Elementary School Dylan Days Talent Show and the 2009 Dylan Days Singer Songwriter Contest will be invited to open the show.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see musical legends perform live on the historic Hibbing High School Auditorium stage. These artists are contemporaries of Hibbing native Bob Dylan and each have their own stories to tell about their experiences with Bob over the years. This will be a once in a lifetime event!
